Well that’s all relative to what country your talking about in regards to the viewers. In the USA it will be the Gymnastics women as the team is strong as well as the media buzz that Shawn Johnson and Nastia Luikin are getting. Also doesn’t hurt that NBC was able to get Gymnastics shown live as opposed to taped delay. In 2004 Athens Women’s all around final was in the top 10 of most watched sporting events in the USA.
Swimming in the USA and Australia is also highly anticipated as well in 2004 the Men’s 200m freestyle was watched by 66 million people making it the 6th most watched sporting event in the world.
As far as world wide audience and despite the doping scandals That have hit Athletics I’m going to say the Men’s 100m in 2004 was the 5th most watched sporting event in the world watched by 87 million. In China it has to be the 110m hurdles as Liu Xiang is a huge star and all eyes will be on him to repeat another gold medal.
The 100m finals at the World Championships also ranked as the 5th most watched global sporting event of the year.
Highest paid would have to be NBA players Kobe makes $17,718 million a year and the average salary is $5.215 M Also don’t forget about the Tennis players as it all depends who shows up. Maria Sharapova says she’s going to play for Russia and with endorsements is worth $20 million dollars. Federer has earnings of over 30 million and Nadal is $16 million this year along he earned $2,292,000.
Not sure about Football as keep in mind the Olympics is a U-23 tournament. While 3 over 23 players are allowed per team it’s usually not the big stars like you see in EURO 2008. Athletics would probally be around 1M that’S only for the elite IN THE HIGH PROFILE EVENTS. You also need to win in the Golden League.
I also read that some of the athletes who play Handball, Water Polo and Volley Ball can make a salary in the $100,000′s for the top athletes in European pro leagues.
