Has an unranked team ever won the NCAA Div I basketball tournament?
Has a team which was unranked in both the AP/coaches poll immediately before the tournament started ever won the NCAA tournament? If so, how many have done so? If not which was the closest (lowest ranked)?
The two lowest seeded teams to win the tournament were NC State at number 6 when they beat Phi Slamma Jamma and Villanova at number 8 when they beat Georgetown. It’s entirely possible that one of them was out of the top 25, but I can’t remember for sure.
